Although the tapir looks like a cross between an elephant and a pig, it is in the family of horses and rhinos. The tapir is so well adapted to living in the rainforest that it virtually hasn’t changed in the last 30 million years. It often lives close to rivers and water holes, where it escapes dangers. Here it can either swim or hold its breath and walk to the bottom to get away from for example a jaguar.
